So, I blinked and summer is almost over (it could be because it is a bit chilly out today and I am sipping on my first Pumpkin Spice Latte of the year – don’t judge)! But, before I start to think about how on earth I am going to wear all my dresses during the cooler months, I wanted to share a quick styling tip for the end-of-summer season.
I admit that once I have put an outfit together that I love I very rarely try to change it up. I’ll open up my closet and feel like I have nothing to wear despite having more than enough options. The other day I had an aha moment! I picked out one of my favorite summer dresses from Francesca’s, which until now I was wearing alone with a simple pair of red oxford sneakers, and started pairing it with other items in my closet.
First up is my favorite solution! I threw a plain heather grey t-shirt from Target over the dress, tied it up with a knot and accessorized with a red chunky beaded necklace. It gave the dress a fresh, casual, and playful upgrade! By adding a t-shirt to the mix I was able to style the dress as a skirt without actually going and buying a new skirt.
I took to my closet again to find some items that would give this sweet gingham dress a little edge. I pulled out my Levi’s Classic Trucker Jacket and paired it with my black-on-black Chuck Taylor All Star sneakers (which, I purchased pre-loved from Vinted)! I’ll be throwing on a pair of tights or knee-high socks to carry this outfit into the fall season.
When I looked at all these pieces sprawled across my bed I noticed something missing. I wanted to kick it up a notch with something a little less casual. I grabbed a red circle skirt that I had made last winter and my new favorite black t-strap heels by Kelly & katie then layered up! The volume of the skirt disguised the fact that I was wearing a dress underneath and I didn’t have to worry about keeping my top tucked in (a major peeve of mine when rocking a skirt and a top).
This was a really great challenge for me and I can’t wait to try it again with other items in my closet! It brought new life into a few articles of clothing that I otherwise have become bored with. I almost feel a little silly for how obvious and easy these styles we, but it is a total game changer for me. If you’re looking at your closet thinking you need a total overhaul, try mixing up your wardrobe!
